🇫🇷 Year 8 French

Building on Year 7: past tenses, future tense, holidays, the environment, and future plans.

The Perfect Tense (Le Passé Composé)

Used to describe completed actions in the past ("I visited", "she ate", "we went").

Formation: avoir + past participle

  • Past participle of -ER verbs: remove -er, add -é (parler → parlé)
  • Past participle of -IR verbs: remove -ir, add -i (finir → fini)
  • Past participle of -RE verbs: remove -re, add -u (répondre → répondu)
Example with avoir j'ai mangé — I ate / I have eaten tu as joué — you played il/elle a regardé — he/she watched nous avons fini — we finished vous avez répondu — you replied ils/elles ont choisi — they chose

Formation: être + past participle (DR MRS VANDERTRAMP)

  • 16 common verbs (mostly movement and change of state) use être instead of avoir
  • Remembered by: Descendre, Rentrer, Mourir, Rester, Sortir, Venir, Aller, Naître, Devenir, Entrer, Retourner, Tomber, Revenir, Arriver, Monter, Partir
  • Also: all reflexive verbs use être
  • When using être, the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject
Être agreement examples Il est allé — He went Elle est allée — She went (add -e for feminine) Ils sont allés — They (m) went (add -s for plural) Elles sont allées — They (f) went (add -es for fem. plural)

The Imperfect Tense (L'Imparfait)

Used for: descriptions in the past ("it was", "there were"), habitual/repeated past actions ("I used to", "I would often"), ongoing background actions interrupted by a completed event.

Formation

  • Take the nous form of the present tense → remove -ons → add the imperfect endings
  • Endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient
  • e.g. parler → nous parlons → parl- + endings: je parlais, tu parlais, il/elle parlait, nous parlions, vous parliez, ils/elles parlaient
  • Exception: être → stem is ét-: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient

Perfect vs Imperfect

  • Use perfect (passé composé) for: a single completed action at a specific time ("Yesterday I went to the shops")
  • Use imperfect for: ongoing states or repeated habits in the past ("When I was young, I used to play football every day")
  • Together they contrast background (imperfect) vs foreground action (perfect): "It was raining (imparfait) when I arrived (passé composé)"

The Simple Future Tense (Le Futur Simple)

Used for definite future actions — more formal than the near future (aller + infinitive).

Formation

  • Take the infinitive (or a special stem for irregular verbs) and add the future endings
  • Endings: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont (same as avoir in present, minus the av-)
  • -RE verbs: drop the final -e before adding endings (attendre → attendr-)
  • e.g. parler: je parlerai, tu parleras, il/elle parlera, nous parlerons, vous parlerez, ils/elles parleront

Irregular Future Stems

  • être → ser- | avoir → aur- | aller → ir- | faire → fer-
  • pouvoir → pourr- | vouloir → voudr- | venir → viendr- | devoir → devr-
