Key Grammar Rules

Gender of Nouns

  • All nouns are masculine (el / un) or feminine (la / una)
  • Most nouns ending in -o are masculine; most ending in -a are feminine
  • Plural: add -s after a vowel; add -es after a consonant (e.g. ciudad → ciudades)
  • Los / Las for plural definite article; Unos / Unas for plural indefinite

Adjective Agreement

  • Adjectives must match the gender and number of the noun
  • Masculine singular: alto | Feminine singular: alta | Masculine plural: altos | Feminine plural: altas
  • Adjectives usually come AFTER the noun in Spanish
  • Some common ones: grande (big), pequeño/a (small), bueno/a (good), malo/a (bad), nuevo/a (new)

Ser vs Estar (Both Mean "to be")

  • Ser: used for permanent or inherent characteristics (nationality, identity, occupation, physical description) — "Soy inglés" (I am English)
  • Estar: used for temporary states, location, feelings — "Estoy cansado" (I am tired); "Está en Madrid" (It is in Madrid)

Negatives

  • Place "no" before the verb: No me gusta el café — I don't like coffee
  • nunca — never: No como nunca carne / Nunca como carne
  • nada — nothing: No tengo nada — I have nothing
  • nadie — nobody: No hay nadie — There is nobody
  • Spanish double negative IS correct: "No tengo nada" (literally "I don't have nothing")

Present Tense Verbs

-AR Verbs

  • Remove -ar and add: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an
  • hablar (to speak): hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan

-ER Verbs

  • Remove -er and add: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en
  • comer (to eat): como, comes, come, comemos, coméis, comen

-IR Verbs

  • Remove -ir and add: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en
  • vivir (to live): vivo, vives, vive, vivimos, vivís, viven

Key Irregular Verbs

  • ser (to be — permanent): soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son
  • estar (to be — temporary): estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están
  • tener (to have): tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen
  • ir (to go): voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van
  • hacer (to do/make): hago, haces, hace, hacemos, hacéis, hacen
  • querer (to want): quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, queréis, quieren (stem-changing: e→ie)
  • poder (to be able to): puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podéis, pueden (stem-changing: o→ue)

The Immediate Future

  • ir (conjugated) + a + infinitive = going to do something
  • Voy a estudiar — I am going to study
  • Va a jugar al fútbol — He/she is going to play football
  • Vamos a comer en un restaurante — We are going to eat in a restaurant
Gustar is special!

Me gusta = I like (literally "it pleases me"). Use "gusta" with singular nouns/infinitives and "gustan" with plural nouns. Me gustan los deportes (I like sports) — because "los deportes" is plural.
