  • Pretérito indefinido: completed past actions. -AR: -é/-aste/-ó/-amos/-asteis/-aron. -ER/-IR: -í/-iste/-ió/-imos/-isteis/-ieron. Irregulars: ser/ir (fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron), tener (tuve), hacer (hice/hizo), estar (estuve), poder (pude), querer (quise), venir (vine), poner (puse), saber (supe)

  • Pretérito perfecto: haber (he/has/ha/hemos/habéis/han) + past participle. Used for recent past or past connected to the present. Hoy he comido paella. Este año hemos viajado a Francia.
  • Futuro simple: infinitive + -é/-ás/-á/-emos/-éis/-án. Irregulars: tener (tendr-), hacer (har-), poder (podr-), querer (querr-), venir (vendr-), saber (sabr-), salir (saldr-), poner (pondr-), ser/ir (ser-/ir-).

  • Pluscuamperfecto: había/habías/había/habíamos/habíais/habían + past participle. I had already eaten when she arrived. Ya había comido cuando llegó.

Indefinido vs Imperfecto

Pretérito indefinido: a specific, completed action → Ayer fui al cine. (Yesterday I went to the cinema.) Imperfecto: habitual past action, description, background → Cuando era joven, jugaba al fútbol todos los días. → Hacía sol cuando de repente empezó a llover.

The Subjunctive (El Subjuntivo)

Present Subjunctive Formation

  • Take the yo form of the presente, remove the -o, add opposite vowel endings:
  • -AR verbs: -e/-es/-e/-emos/-éis/-en (hablar → hable, hables...)
  • -ER/-IR verbs: -a/-as/-a/-amos/-áis/-an (comer → coma, comas...)
  • Verbs that are irregular in the yo present will have that irregularity throughout the subjunctive: tener (yo tengo) → tenga, tengas...; hacer (hago) → haga; venir (vengo) → venga; salir (salgo) → salga; poner (pongo) → ponga; conocer (conozco) → conozca
  • Fully irregular: ser → sea; estar → esté; ir → vaya; haber → haya; saber → sepa; dar → dé

When to Use the Subjunctive

  • Expressions of wanting someone else to do something: quiero que (vayas), espero que (llegues pronto), necesito que (me ayudes)
  • Emotional reactions: me alegra que (estés bien), es una pena que (no puedas venir), tengo miedo de que (sea tarde)
  • Doubt or possibility: dudo que (sea verdad), es posible que (llueva), no creo que (tenga razón)
  • Impersonal expressions: es importante que, es necesario que, es mejor que, es urgente que
  • Ojalá (I hope/if only): Ojalá haga buen tiempo. (I hope the weather is good.) — always triggers subjunctive
  • Conjunctions: para que (so that), aunque (even though + uncertain situation), a menos que (unless), antes de que (before), sin que (without)

Ser vs Estar

Uses of Ser

  • Permanent or inherent characteristics: identity, origin, nationality, profession, material, ownership
  • Es médico. (She's a doctor.) Es de España. (He's from Spain.) Es de madera. (It's made of wood.)
  • Descriptions of inherent qualities: La nieve es blanca. El cielo es azul. Mi madre es inteligente y amable.
  • Time and dates: ¿Qué hora es? Son las tres. Hoy es lunes. Es el 5 de marzo.
  • Passive voice: La carta fue escrita por mi madre.

Uses of Estar

  • Location: El banco está en la calle Mayor. Estoy en casa.
  • Temporary states and conditions: Estoy cansado/enfermo/contento hoy. El café está frío.
  • Progressive tenses: Estoy comiendo. Estaban hablando.
  • Changes from a perceived norm: ¡Estás muy guapo hoy! (You look really good today!) — contrast with Eres guapo (You are handsome — inherent quality)

Pairs That Change Meaning

  • ser aburrido = to be a boring person; estar aburrido = to feel bored
  • ser listo = to be clever; estar listo = to be ready
  • ser malo = to be bad/evil; estar malo = to be ill
  • ser bueno = to be a good person; estar bueno = to be tasty/to feel well
  • ser seguro = to be safe (inherently); estar seguro = to be certain/sure
  • ser rico = to be wealthy; estar rico = to be delicious
  • ser muerto = not used; estar muerto = to be dead

GCSE Exam Skills

Reading and Listening

  • Scan for cognates and key words, but beware of false friends: embarazada (pregnant, NOT embarrassed), sensible (sensitive, NOT sensible), actual (current, NOT actual), éxito (success, NOT exit)
  • Look at the context of the whole sentence/paragraph before choosing your answer
  • In listening, you often hear distractors — the first thing mentioned may not be the final answer (the speaker may change their mind)

Writing for High Marks

  • Use at least three tenses: present + a past tense + future/conditional in every extended piece
  • Include opinions with justifications: En mi opinión... / Desde mi punto de vista... / Lo que pienso es que... porque... / aunque... sin embargo...
  • Include complex structures: subjunctive after querer que, relative clauses (que, quien, donde), se + verb for impersonal constructions, por vs para
  • Por vs para: POR = cause/reason, exchange, duration, through, by means of, on behalf of. PARA = purpose/goal, destination, recipient, deadline, contrast/opinion (para mí = in my opinion)

Speaking

  • Photo card/photo task: describe the image (En la foto se ve/hay...), speculate (Puede que... / Me parece que... / Quizás...), link to a relevant theme
  • General conversation: prepare full, detailed answers. Use fillers: pues, bueno, a ver, es decir, o sea, en fin, efectivamente
  • Pronunciation: accent marks change stress and meaning (el = the, él = he; si = if, sí = yes; mas = but, más = more). Roll the r/rr. The j sounds like a harsh English h. The ll/y sounds like y or sh depending on dialect.
